Old Mans Toes
YOU GUYS.
Sister Bean is a legend.
Every thursday, we volunteer at an assisted living home, and we get to paint their nails! I've gotten to know Rosemary, Nancy, Wilma, and Barbra. Let me tell you a little more about Barbra. She's 82, adorable, born in Kansas, and has the most silly husband, Jack. He comes up to the table we're at and asks me if I can do his toes. He then takes his shoes off and shows me. I said, "Jack, we need to cut those! That can not be comfortable." He said, "No, no, I want you to paint them."............. I can't make this stuff up.
Sister Bean, being the most Chirstlike person I know, gets on her knees and paints Jack's long toenails. I couldn't believe it. He was so happy. It was such a core memory. I know if Jesus Christ was there, he would have painted his nails as well, I'm just not quite there yet
What a week.
- Jerome from the Wendys drive thru was hittin on us, so naturally, we invited him to church.
- We were in a parking lot inviting this one lady to church and as we were handing her our card with our number and church address on it, another women overheard us and came up with her hand open saying "can I get one too?? God is good.
- Went over to the Sheets house and sister sheets told us about the time she stepped on President ( at the time ) Hinkleys foot at the temple as she was taking pictures of her friends in her 20s. She turned around and apologized immediately, and President Hinkley shook her hand and looked in her eyes and told her she would be back at this temple in 1 year, getting sealed to her husband. She met Bob 4 months later and got sealed the following year in that temple. The funny part of this story is that she was a recent convert at the time and didn't know who President Hinkley was, so after he told her that and left she goes back to her friends- who's mouths are wide open because she literally just met the Prophet and she said "Who was that weirdo? He tried to tell me my future.." Her friends just died, haha they said, "Deborah, that was the Prophet!!"
-It is in fact still freezing here, but there's something so exciting about knocking in the snow.
My anthem this week was the hit hymn 140
Did you think to pray?
"When your heart was filled with anger, did you think to pray?"
"Did you plead for grace, my brother, that you might forgive another who had crossed your way?"
"When sore trials come upon you...
When your soul was full of sorrow, did you think to pray?"
"Oh, how praying rests the weary! Prayer will change the night to day. So, when life gets dark and dreary, don't forget to pray."
The mission has been nothing short of humbling.
We (I) cannot get through things alone. As stubborn and independent as I want to be and handle things on my own, Jesus Chirst knows. He's been through it all and can help. "Humble yourselfs before the Lord and He will lift you up to greater things." - Elder Ochoa. There have been times out here that I have had to rely on nothing else but Jesus Christ and what an exercise of faith that has been. Teaching Rex a couple of days ago about His Atonement was an outstanding experience. We read with him in Alma 7 but specifically focused on verse 11 -"And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people" I got to bare my testimony of The Omnipotent One himself, Jesus Christ. Rex looked at me when I was wrapping up and said, "See, I just want to be as happy as you someday, and I'll get there. You ladys are helping me change my life around." Tears.
What is your favorite name of the Savior?
Holy One, Rock, Friend, Emanuel, Living Water, Redeemer, The Way? I think mine would be The Great Physican. Jesus Chirst heals. He can and will help us if we trust and put our faith in Him.
